ARC Review: The Loneliest Girl in the Universe by Lauren James

32601841Synopsis: Can you fall in love with someone you’ve never met, never even spoken to – someone who is light years away?

Romy Silvers is the only surviving crew-member of a spaceship travelling to a new planet, on a mission to establish a second home for humanity amongst the stars. Alone in space, she is the loneliest girl in the universe until she hears about a new ship which has launched from Earth – with a single passenger on board. A boy called J.

Their only communication with each other is via email – and due to the distance between them, their messages take months to transmit across space. And yet Romy finds herself falling in love.

But what does Romy really know about J? And what do the mysterious messages which have started arriving from Earth really mean?

Sometimes, there’s something worse than being alone . . .

Review:

I was born on The Infinity. I’ve only ever known its clean whitet walls; its sterilized atmosphere and artificial gravity; its low, grey rooms, curving around the ship’s hull. – The Loneliest Girl in the Universe, Lauren James

Set in the future, The Loneliest Girl in the Universe follows 16 year old Romy, who is the lone survivor of a spaceship bound toward a new world and life in Earth II. All we know about Romy is that her parents died and she was left in charge of the spaceship over the past five years since they passed away.

The author, Lauren James also has a way with writing which really sucks you in. The plot is told in chronolological order– in emails between Earth and J, internal dialogue and a daily countdown till the arrival of her companion ship.

The details of the spaceship and science elements of the book were so well-written that I felt like I were living in the ship with Romy. Furthermore, the emails between characters really brought in the inner thoughts of Romy in her loneliness where we learned more about her and life before she lost her parents. I connected with Romy where she watched TV shows and wrote fanfiction to pass the time. She also has really strong and emotional characteristics for someone living alone in a spaceship headed toward an uninhabited planet. At one part, I wanted to reach into the pages and give her a bear hug.

In all, The Loneliest Girl in the Universe will be a story which stays with you for a long time with that unforgettable plot twist– leaving you completely stunned as it goes from interstellar-romance/space novel to a freaking supernova.

I am definitely looking forward to reading more of Lauren James’ books and hope for a sequel to this book!
